Abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”)

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure which involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen in order to tighten the muscle of the abdominal wall.

Indications for abdominoplasty

• Mothers who have given birth to one or more children
• Patients who have achieved significant weight loss and still have overhanging “apron” of skin

Contraindications for abdominoplasty

• Women who wish to have subsequent pregnancies (abdominal muscles can be torn during pregnancy and cause problems)
• Individuals who wish to lose a large amount of weight

Abdominoplasty should not be viewed as an alternative to large amount of fat loss. After surgical procedure a scar remains on lower abdomen.

Preparing for abdominoplasty

The surgeon will organize an initial consultation during which all surgery related issues will be assessed.

Pre – operative instructions for abdominoplasty

• Smoker patients need to quit smoking for two weeks prior to surgery. Reducing the quantity of cigarettes is not acceptable; the patient has to avoid nicotine completely. Smoking places patients at much higher risk for post operative complications and makes the recovery process slower.
• No special diet is required. Patients need a healthy diet and good nutrition to recover and heal the surgical wounds.
• It is necessary to fully inform your plastic surgeon about all of your medications- including psychotropic, herbals and dietary supplements, as you need to temporarily stop the use of them.

Surgical procedure

Abdominoplasty is normally done under general anesthesia and it takes up to 4 hours to perform. During tummy tuck surgery an incision is made across the lower abdomen. Surgery also involves a shift in umbilicus. A drainage tube may be inserted under the skin and remain there for few days.

Partial or ‘mini’ abdominoplasty 

It is a procedure for those patients who have large amount of skin or fat deposits below the umbilicus (belly button). During “mini” abdominoplasty umbilicus is not repositioned and it takes less time to perform. After surgical procedure the patient stays at hospital for 1-2 days under the supervision of specialists.
